If you have lived in Andover for a while, you already know what August feels like on a Wednesday at Bartlet and Chestnut. Blanket on the grass, a tribute band on the little stage, kids ricocheting between cornhole and giant Jenga. What has shifted this year is what happens after the last song. The short walk over to Park Street now runs past three destinations that were not all here twelve months ago, and by the end of the month a fourth will have opened its doors. Downtown's evening center of gravity has drifted two blocks off Main, and August is the first month you can really feel it.
The Wednesday anchor is still the town green at Bartlet and Chestnut
Andover Recreation's annual Concerts in the Park series runs Wednesday evenings through Aug. 26, with a mix of classic rock, country, jazz, blues, Beatles and Fleetwood Mac tribute acts, and family-friendly entertainment. After a Pomps Pond kickoff in June, the remaining concerts take place at the park at the corner of Bartlet and Chestnut streets. If weather moves the show, rain dates are scheduled for Thursdays.
The programming is the reason people come back week after week. It has stopped being just a concert and started being the town's weekly meetup. Each event features family activities including mini golf, face painting, cornhole, giant Jenga, and other games, which is what turns a two-hour show into a four-hour reason to leave the house.

Park Street is where the night keeps going
Here is the shift. A year ago, the walk from the park toward dinner meant heading to Main. Now Park Street itself is the destination, and the reason is a run of new operators inside a two-minute walk of one another.
The most recent addition is a fusion kitchen at 36 Park Street. A new Thai–Vietnamese fusion restaurant has opened at 36 Park Street, offering pho, comfort dishes, and signature drinks in downtown Andover. Khao San opened in January and has been quietly building a regular crowd through the spring and summer. The menu blends authentic Vietnamese pho with classic comfort dishes and Thai-inspired flavors, and it is open Sunday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., which lines up cleanly with a post-concert walk-in.
Two doors down, the block gets its most unusual new tenant later this month. The Hidden Parlor is coming to Park Street in downtown Andover, with an anticipated August 2026 opening as a dedicated American Mahjong parlor created for open play, leagues, guided sessions, curated events, and connection around the table. It is a private club rather than a walk-in restaurant, but the concept is worth knowing about even if you never plan to join.

The scale is real. Designed as a private, members-only clubhouse, the 3,800-square-foot space will accommodate up to 44 members. The Hidden Parlor features 11 Mahjong tables with seating for up to 44 players, including two automatic shuffling tables. Membership is offered through four annual access tiers — South, West, North and East — reflecting different levels of participation. This is not a pop-up. It is a permanent operator on Park Street, and the fact that a specialty club chose downtown Andover for a first-of-its-kind concept tells you something about how the block is being read from the outside.
The dining anchors that make Park Street a loop, not a stop
Park Street works as an evening destination because the newer openings did not land on an empty block. Two established restaurants already sat within the same short walk, and they are what turn the block into a loop.
34 Park. The restaurant at 34 Park Street has been the block's private-event anchor for years. Its semi-private dining room holds up to 40 guests, and the entire restaurant can hold up to 125 guests, which makes it the default for engagement parties, showers, and corporate dinners in downtown. If you have hosted anything in Andover in the last few years, odds are you have been in the room.
Elm Square Oyster Co. A few steps away, Elm Square Oyster Co. is a fresh seafood and "new" American restaurant in downtown Andover, MA with a fun bar serving cocktails, wine, and craft beers. If you time a Wednesday right, the pre-concert move is a stop for happy hour: oyster happy hour Tuesday and Wednesday, 5 to 7 PM, with $1.49 chef's-choice oysters on the half-shell. That window ends before the concert starts, which is either a coincidence or somebody at the town paying attention.
The wider context, in case you have been out of town
Two other recent openings sit slightly off the Park Street block but reshape how downtown reads on a Saturday morning or a weekday drive-through:
- Nan's Rustic Kitchen + Market opened at 10 Main St., in the former Pazzo Pizza space. Nan's brought a hybrid model to Andover — part market, part café, part takeout destination — offering prepared foods, coffee, groceries, and its signature fried chicken.
- On the south side of town, after Tavern on 28 closed earlier in the year, Bandoleros Mexican Grill moved into 429 S. Main St. and opened in late October, bringing tacos, margaritas, and a full-service Mexican dining option to the space.
Neither is a Park Street tenant, but both matter to the same story: downtown is not losing operators, it is turning them over, and the turnover is landing on concepts that draw a weeknight crowd rather than a special-occasion one.
A Wednesday loop that works this month
If you want a plan for the final three Wednesdays of the concert series, here is the one that has been working:
- Park near Bartlet and Chestnut by 5:30. Anywhere on the residential side streets is fair game.
- Head to Elm Square Oyster Co for the 5 to 7 happy hour.
- Walk to the park in time for the 6 p.m. downbeat. Bring the blanket.
- Stay through the last set, then loop back through Park Street. If Khao San is still seating, that is your late dinner. If not, 34 Park's kitchen runs later on Wednesdays.
- Note where The Hidden Parlor's sign goes up. The exact address will only be shared with members and serious prospective members, so the sighting itself is the game.
Why any of this matters if you already live here
For most of the last decade, "downtown Andover" as a phrase meant Main Street. Park Street was a side street with a couple of restaurants and a lot of foot traffic passing through toward somewhere else. That has changed in about eighteen months. The addition of a fusion kitchen in January, a members' club in August, and the steady turnover of storefronts elsewhere in downtown have quietly rebuilt the block into a place where a Wednesday night can start and end within a two-minute walk.
